It was early summer in Chicago 2011, right after a particularly brutal winter, my first one in Chicago. Early 2011 was the roughest time of my life but I had made it through and was enjoying my summer. I was out with two of my friends, entirely too late at night, way out in Montrose Park, when we checked the CTA bus tracker and realized we had missed the last bus west. Oops! These were the Uberless & Lyftless days of existence (can you even remember such a primitive era!?) and the only … [Read more...] about Exposed
A Short Letter to My People
So many people, saying so many things right now, from their perspectives. So here is my contribution. The Perspective of a Single Mom: I’m in a weird place where I don’t have enough alone time nor do I have enough social time. It’s a strange paradox and I’m definitely someone that needs both. As Jonah got older, I had hoped that he’d sleep better but, he doesn’t and I still don’t get enough rest and I am perpetually tired. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that I still not fully … [Read more...] about A Short Letter to My People
Like a Two Year Old with a Paper Owl
When I walked outside to see flurries circulating in the wind that March 2012 morning, it was hard to believe that just the day before I was getting sunburned, by a pool in Phoenix. At first, this seemed … [Read more...] about Like a Two Year Old with a Paper Owl
In a Boat with 10 Holes
I was hungry and my heart was weak When you found me limping down the street You said you had a place to stay That was safe and warm and far away And there we feasted and feasted for days And I gave you my love and I gave you my praise And I hung on your words and I waited around To see all your castles high in the clouds But I grew cold beside the vanishing flame And the sun moon and stars never came When the sun did rise, the light was sublime And the fog slipped away for the … [Read more...] about In a Boat with 10 Holes
First Gear of the Highway
I remember trying to learn how to drive stick shift for the first time. I LOVE driving manual cars and it’s pretty much a must-have for me in a car. Little Bette is super zippy and I love zooming around in that car. It wasn’t always the case though. Pretty much anyone who has ever learned how to drive stick prefers it… but every single one of them most likely hated it at first, especially depending on what kind of car they were learning on. I was trying to learn how to drive stick in an ’85 … [Read more...] about First Gear of the Highway
